Professor Hildred Geertz pointed out that the artist claimed that the mythic hero Kebo Iwa was among his ancestors. In Balinese legends Kebo Iwa is known as a 'Builder of Many Things', and is responsible for a number of important buildings like the Puri Desa (village temple) at Batuan. Tradition tells he carved them with his long thumbnail. In this legend Gajah Mada, the prime minister of Majapahit, has to defeat the giant to take over Bali. He tricks the giant into digging a hole and then his men stone Kebo Iwa, however Kebo Iwa throws the stones back. For the same story see also lot 128. The artist was a member of the Pita Maha artists' association. Inscribed with the artist's name on the reverse by an unidentified hand.
