In his diary for 8 April 1991 Mackintosh records that he visited the church of San Trinita Maggiore where he was very impressed with its internal decoration which 'surpassed anything I had seen before'. He also noted making a sketch of the doorway which is presumably this drawing, although he has dated it and the drawing of Santa Marina del Carmine [see following lot] 9 April 1891
