Lot Essay

Mackintosh left Rome on 4 May to stay at Orvieto until 10 May. He spent all of his time sketching at the Cathedral which he found very exciting: 'Most beautiful cathedral especially the front. Built of white marble with bands of red, purple blue black brown yellow marble, beautiful twisted columns. Bronze evangelists, and just covered with gold mosaic bands mosaic pictures in front said to be modern restoration. Chapel interior beautifully painted/Otherwise not much inside.'
