Lot Essay

Designed for in 1910 for Fra Newbery, Headmaster of the Glasgow School of Arts, Mackintosh's friend and patron. The inlay is not glass but a synthetic material, probably a plastic made from casein, which Mackintosh used extensively at this date in the Chinese Room at the Ingram Street Tea Rooms, Glasgow. Only the foot boards of these two beds survive.

The design for these bed ends is offered as lot 123
