AUSTRALIANA THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE GRAEME JOHN CLIPSTON (1948-2000) (Lots 201-276) Graeme Clipston was born and brought up in the small coastal town of Denmark, a short distance from Albany in Western Australia. As a young man he dreamed of escaping small town life and at the age of 25 left Australia for Europe, settling in London which became his home for the rest of his life. He was never to return to Australia but remained fiercely patriotic and began to build a large collection of 'Australiana': maps, prints, books and pictures all relating to history of his native country. He had a keen eye. The uncommon and the unusual rarely escaped him. Trading in Australiana, Graeme became a well known figure to collectors and dealers in both hemispheres. His home reflected his passion, with most of his favourite 'Australians' adorning his drawing room walls. These, with other items hidden away for many years, now come to sale at Christie's, in accordance with Graeme's wishes. (Joslyn McDiarmid, London, July 2001)
