James Cook (1728-1779)

Details
James Cook (1728-1779)

Three voyages to the Pacific Ocean... faithfully abridged from the quarto edition... to which is prefixed, the Life of Captain Cook. Boston: Manning & Loring for Thomas & Andrews and D. West, January 1797. 2 volumes in one, 12° (17 x 9.7cm.). 2 engraved frontispieces and 6 plates. (Browned, neat marginal repairs to titles, frontispieces and some text leaves.) Contemporary sheep (rebacked and cornered). Provenance: Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg (1782-1844, signature and date '1803' on both titles).

An early American abridgement of the official accounts of all three of Cook's voyages, with an interesting provenance. Muhlenberg was elected to Congress in 1829 and served through until 1838. In 1838 he was made the first American minister to Austria, but the legation was a severe drain on his financial resources and, at his own request, he was recalled in 1840. He died during the campaign for the Governorship of Pennsylvania in 1844, an election he would have been bound to win. A Lutheran clergyman as well as a politician and diplomat, Muhlenberg apparently acquired the present volume during the period when he served as pastor of Trinity Church, Reading, Pennsylvania. Mitchell/Cook 58; Sabin 16258.
