Lot Essay

The view relates to a detail of Elliot's 'View of the Town and Roads of Singapore from the Government Hill' engraved by John Clark and published as an uncoloured aquatint in J. Crawford, Journal of an Embassy from the Governor-General of India to the Courts of Siam and Cochin China (second edition), London 1830. The present monochrome watercolour may be part of Elliot's model for the monochrome aquatint.
For this early view of Singapore, see M. Teo, Y.C. Chong, J. Oh, Nineteenth Century Prints of Singapore, Singapore, 1990, pp.75-6 and plate 3.
