The former cast after a model by Edmé Dumont, the athlete in the act of splitting a tree trunk, the integrally cast base with Edme Dumont 1768, on a Siena marble base -- 17¼in. (43.8cm.) high overall; the latter cast after a model by Jacques Bousseau, his left leg raised on a tree stump, the base cast with J.Bousseau, 1715, also on a Siena marble base -- 20 7/8in. Lot Essay

The marble original of Un Soldat Bandant un Arc by Jacques Bousseau is now housed in the Louvre. It has often been dubbed Odysseus, the suggestion being that the portrayal depicts the hero in preparation for his slaughter of his wife Penelope'suitors. However, there appears to be no evidence that this was the artist's intent.
