Lot Essay
The frame of the marble-topped sideboard-table is designed in the George II 'Roman' fashion with Ionic egg-and-dart cornice and frieze of 'Venus' wave-scrolled ribbon-fret enriched with Roman foliage. Patterns for related chamfer-pillared tables, with ribbon-fret brackets, featured in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pls. XXV and XXXVI.
A related side table possibly by John Cobb, and probably supplied to John Scott, Esq. for Banks Fee House, Gloucestershire, has a similar Vitruvian-scrolled frieze. It was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 July 2000, lot 137 (£223,750). The Banks Fee table is almost identical to one at Temple Newsam House, Leeds, which is attributed to John Cobb on the evidence of several payments to Sir George Strickland of Boynton Hall, Yorkshire between 1754 and 1773 (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1978, II, no. 337, pp. 278-280). Both the Banks Fee table and the Temple Newsam table have the same kind of 18th Century carriage labels nailed to the underside. What is probably the pair to the Banks Fee table, now reduced in depth and width, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 June 2001, lot 135 (£97,250).
