Lot Essay

The Rome-based Scottish portrait sculptor Lawrence MacDonald (d. 1878) was a founder member of the British Academy of Arts, when it was established shortly after his arrival in Rome in 1822. By the mid-19th Century the rooms of his studio were so filled with plaster busts of noble and illustrious persons that it was reported to represent 'the peerage done into marble'.
