Central Persia, circa 1890
The pale celadon-green field with vases in each corner issuing angular flowering and leafy vine around a central shaded tomato-red panel containing palmettes issuing floral sprays and angular flowering and leafy vine enclosing a cusped and stepped shaded blue medallion with pendants of similar design around a similar ivory medallion enclosing a rosette centrepiece, in a shaded blue border of palmettes flanked by serrated leaves together with flowerheads and angular leafy vine between tomato-red stylised linked floral spray and ivory angular vine, reciprocal skittle-pattern and stylised hooked stripes, plain outer golden yellow stripe, very slight wear, supple structure

Lot Essay

The medallion is flanked by the same inscription repeated four times, twice in negative. The writing is minute and very difficult to read. A possible reading of some of the inscription is farmayesh-e aqa muhammad..shahanshah (Commissioned by Aqa Muhammad..Shahanshah).
