The shaded fox-brown field scattered with serrated flowerheads and minor motifs around a central ivory square panel framed by minor flowerheads containing a pale pink cross-panel with arrowheads containing a stylised floral motif, a pale blue panel containing a serrated flowerhead above and below, in an ivory border of stepped floral panels together with facing triangles and vine meander between reciprocal skittle-pattern stripes, pain outer stripe, ends rewoven, small areas of repiling

Lot Essay

The panel in the middle of this long rug has the same design as a small group of highly sought-after soumac bags woven by the Shahsevan (Tanavoli, Parviz: Shahsevan, Fribourg, Switzerland, 1985, no.202 for example). This feature also relates it to a small number of other runners which have been attributed to the Shahsevan of the Moghan district (Tanavoli, Parviz: "Shahsevan Pile Carpets", Hali 45, June 1989, pl.7, p.34; Oriental Rugs from Atlantic Collections, Philadelphia, 1996, no.94, p.94; see also Bennett, Ian: Caucasian Rugs, London, 1981, no.198, p.168). The cross-panels of smaller motifs, in this case serrated lozenges, are a very typical feature of Shahsevan weavings. The border on the present rug would also be consistent with this attribution, being found on a number of rugs not necessarily associated with the Shahsevan but coming from the Moghan or neighbouring Talish regions.
