Poetry and commentary, Arabic manuscript on cream paper, divided into six sections, 185ff. with 27ll. of dark sepia maghribi, text outlined with red rules, the poetry written in double size, the commentary written between, catch words, old numbering, marginal annotations in the hand of the scribe, few folios later replacements, some worm damage, old repairs, folios loose in binding, later tan morocco binding with tooled medallion

Lot Essay

This is a fine and very early copy of a commentary on the famous six classical Arabic poets, al-Nabigha, 'Antara, Tarafa, Zuhayr, 'Alqama and Imru' al-Qais. He is considered to be the earliest commentator on the Six Poets. (Sezgin, F.: Geschichte des Arabischen Schrifttums, Leiden, 1967-2000, II, p.109)
The author was born in Santamaria in Spain, lived in Cordova and died in 1083 AD in Seville. (Brockelmann, C.: GAL I, pp.309-310).
