North or central India, 17th century
Of rectangular form, the face carved with an elegant four-line naskh inscription in a broad margin with bevelled edges, recent gold mount with attachment loop above
1 5/8 x 1 7/8in. (4 x 4.6cm.)

Lot Essay

The inscription translates:
"In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful: O the Vanquisher of enemies! O Lord of the friend! O the One who causes wonders! O Murteda 'Ali!"

The calligraphy on this pendant is very similar to that on the preceding lot, which in turn is close in layout and calligraphy to an example dated AH 1029/1629 AD (see note to that lot for further details). Another closely related rectangular intaglio was sold at Sotheby's London, 3 May 2001, lot 145.
