SCHÜTZ, Karl (1745-1800), Johann ZIEGLER (1750-1812) and Laurenz JANSCHA (1749-1812). Sammlung von Aussichten der Residenzstadt Wien von ihren Vorstädten und einigen umliegenden Oertern. Vienna: Artaria & Co., [plates dated 1779-1792].

Oblong large broadsheets (394 x 535 mm). Engraved title with coloured vignette of five angels looking at a painting of Vienna and 87 ETCHED VIEWS, ALL HAND-COLOURED, within brownish-grey wash borders, engraved captions on grey ground, within a double-ruled frame, area of image approx. 265 x 410 mm., plates dated 1779-1792. Dark olive morocco gilt, spine gilt in seven compartments, with raised bands, inner dentelles, by J. Wright, edges gilt.

The plates are numbered consecutively in three series. Plates 1-40 (numbered 1-36 with 4 supplementary plates 7a, 9a, 19a and 30a) each with additional letterpress text; followed by a new series numbered 1-30 (without text) and a third series numbered 1-17. The first two series are concerned entirely with Vienna and its suburbs, while the last series has views of other towns in Austria and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Most of the plates in the first series are by Schütz and Ziegler (one by Janscha, one by Schäffer). The second series is by Janscha and Schütz, the third by the same, but also Carl Schallhaus, J. Schäffer and others. This last series, numbered in the bibliography 67 to 83, has views of Innsbruck, Linz, Mariazell, Klosterneuburg, Nussdorf, Passau, Braunau, Budapest, Belgrade, etc. (The wash border of the print of Belgrade is smudged and spotted, probably due to it having been handled while still wet, second view of Dornbach with marginal ink blot and slight discoloration), OTHERWISE AN IMMACULATE COPY.

I. Nebehay & R. Wagner, Bibliographie altösterreichischer Ansichswerke, Graz 1981-83 nos. 670 and 671 describes this work, listing the 95 plates known to have been published (to be sold as single sheets), but in a different sequence from the present copy and not mentioning the letterpress text for the first 40 plates. They state however that the sequence varies in different copies and that no complete set of plates in book form is known. The two copies in the Österreichische National Bibliothek have only 61 and 72 plates. We believe that this copy must be one of the most complete. It has the earliest title (no. 670), which was soon changed after publication (to no. 671); and also the first issue of the second view of Dornbach. This suggests that it is a very early issue of the set of plates.
