Lot Essay

Due to the outbreak of the war in 1914, Isaac Israels was no longer given permission to work on the streets of London and decided to travel to Switzerland with a laisser-passer for Europe. The artist eventually only stayed in Switzerland for two weeks and visited Bern and Fribourg. In a letter to G.H. Marius dated 18 May 1915, Israels described the beautiful fountains he came across during his stay: 'Kent U Fribourg, nl. de benedenstad? Het heeft iets van Toledo vooral met de zon. Er zijn daar eenige fonteinen uit 't begin van de 16de eeuw, absoluut niet gerepareerd, die de moeite waard zijn om te gaan kijken.' (Anna Wagner, Isaac Israels, Venlo 1985, p. 100)

We wish to thank Joop van Roosmalen for confirming the authenticity of the present lot after firsthand examination.
