Lot Essay

The arms are those of Starkie quartering Farington and impaling those of Gwillym of Langstone, Hertfordshire, as borne by Le Gendre Starkie of Huntroyde near Burnley in Lancashire (1790-1822) and his wife Elizabeth, 2nd daughter of Richard Atherton Gwillym of Bewsey. They were married May 12, 1814.

A George III table garniture with a mirror plateau, four-branch epergne, and four dessert stands, dating to 1798 and 1802, engraved with the arms of Starkie of Huntroyde, possibly for Le Gendre Pierce Nicholas Starkie (1770-1807), father of Le Gendre Starkie, sold at Christie's, London, December 14, 1988, lot 146.

The following two lots are from the same service as the present lot and must have commissioned to commemorate the wedding of Le Gendre Starkie and Elizabeth Gwillym.
