A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with associated octagonal sighted barrel cut with seven grooves, flat lock with integral wheel-cover engraved with a monster-head and foliage on the cock and with expanded flower on the cock-spring bracket, full stock with fluted fore-end, the butt carved in relief on the left side with a sportsman and his dog in pursuit of a stag in a wooden landscape, dated 1685 and incised with the stockmaker's initials FH behind the barrel tang, under the lock a male moustached face, also in relief, the patch-box cover carved with a boar and a hound, broad indented trigger-guard, engraved staghorn ramrod-pipes, and later fore-end cap (repaired), set trigger, and horn-tipped ramrod, dated 1685, probably Scwäbish-Gmünd
