AN AUSTRIAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE with octagonal sighted barrel slightly swamped at the engraved muzzle and rifled with eight grooves, engraved at the dated breech with flowers and foliage and maker's name 'Herman Wetteman', and retaining traces of original blued finish, tang numbered 1, signed flat lock engraved with a crowned double-headed eagle on the wheel-cover, and with a marine monster on the pierced cock (finial repaired) and bridle to the cock-spring, fruitwood full stock with waved fluted fore-end (slight damage) and inlaid with horn lines enclosing pierced and engraved horn plaques, behind the barrel tang with a human eye, in front of the indented iron trigger-guard with Hercules and Cerberus, the cheek-piece with the Judgement of Paris in a landscape, involving the engraver's(?) initials GR, above a horn panel engraved with a gunner firing a cannon, also in a landscape, the butt finely inlaid with a border of interlaced scrollwork, the patch-box cover with strapwork and the figure of Fortuna above the initials GR, horn butt-plate engraved later with the date 1665 and conjoined initials BHL within a wreath, set trigger, pierced horn ramrod-pipes engraved with marine monsters, fore-end cap of white and dark horn engraved with a male and female figure, and original ramrod with white and dark horn tip, the lock signed Zelner In Salzburg, dated 1665 33in. barrel
