(Some spotting to vols. I to V.) Contemporary dark green morocco gilt, g.e. (Covers of vol.I affected by damp, head of spines of vols.II and IV with rodent damage). SUBSCRIBER'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF GOULD'S "MASTERPIECE... AN INCOMPARABLE CATALOGUE AND COMPENDIUM OF BEAUTIES" (Fine Bird Books p.29). Most of the subjects came from Gould's own collection of specimens. The plates gave him a chance to display the new technique of imitating the birds' iridescent plumage by the use of brilliant metallic colouring.
