Lot Essay

A popular subject from Sickert's first visit to Venice during the winter of 1895-6. Wendy Baron lists four versions from this period and two later ones from Sickert's second visit in 1900-1 (W. Baron, Sickert, London, 1973, no.83, 141).

Judge Evans' association with Sickert began after the artist returned to London. Mrs. Evans recalled that when they visited his studio, Sickert would show them a selection of drawings and sketches and he would paint an oil version of their choice for 25pds(see Idem, p.65)
