Instead of the usual, much painted panorama Greenwich Park, Varley has chosen to take his view from lower down the hill with the Observatory in the foreground. The Observatory was built in 1675-6, probably from designs by Sir Christopher Wren, and enlarge 1772-3 and again, after this watercolour was painted, in the 19th Century
