Lot Essay

An unsigned pencil drawing by George Bullock at Tew Park, Oxfordshire, confirms the attribution to Bullock of this distinctive design. The attribution was first made in the exhibition catalogue The Fashionable Fire Place, 1660-1840, Temple Newsam House, 1985, p. 30, no. 22.
Four grates of the Bullock design were sold from Tew Park in Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lots 4, 27, 48 and 155. Another was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 18 November 1993, lot 110.
