Lot Essay

Eclipse by Marske out of Spiletta was bred by the Duke of Cumberland. He was sold as a one-year-old to William Wildman. He was unbeaten in his eighteen races and his career is best summed up by Denis O'Kelly the Irish gambler and subsequent owner, who said at Eclipse's debut race in 1769 "Eclipse first and the rest nowhere".
