Lot Essay

As is noted by Pope-Hennessy, the present plaquette was obviously intended to be inserted into a pax. Apart from the version in the Kress collection, another version exists in the Musée de Cluny, Paris, and although Valerio Belli has been suggested as the author, this has not been universally accepted (loc.cit.).
