Lot Essay

Antonio Selvi was a medallist and pupil of Soldani's, whose style he followed closely. He is known to have worked in both Florence and England, and died in 1755. The subject of this relief, Giovanni Gastone de' Medici, was the 7th Grand-Duke of Tuscany, and on his death in 1743, the Medici dynasty became extinct.
