Lot Essay

Mariuz, loc. cit., describing the present picture as 'uno dei più smaglianti ritratti di fantasia di Giandomenico', dates it to the artist's years in Spain, 1762-1770, and points out that it was loosely inspired by Giambattista's painting of the same subject in the Detroit Institute of Arts, generally dated to the second half of the 1750s. He also introduces the possibility that it may originally have formed part of a series of portraits of young women with musical instruments, such as that, of similar size, in the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes, Cadiz (ibid., p. 116).
