Lot Essay

The sitters were married c.1612/13 and lived in the Lycklama Stins, Wolvega. Their daughters, Ansck and Jeepke who married Sytse and Johannes Crack respectively, were painted by Harmen Mensma in the same year as the present pair (see A. Wassenbergh, De Portretkunst in Friesland in de zeventiende eeuw, 1967, p.42, fig.122). The present portraits do not follow the normal convention in that the man is depicted on his wife's right.
