manuscript on sandalwood, 129ff. plus one flyleaf, each with 24ll. of small black naskh between gold rules, punctuation in red, gold roundels between verses, red and gold margins between black rules, blue outer rule, the divisions of text marked marginally in red, sura headings in red on gold panels, (some splits and repairs in pages, minor damages and repairs to edges), opening bifolio finely illuminated in gold and polychrome (rebacked and repaired, edges damaged), final folio with colophon dated 1164, polychrome lacquer binding with floral design (worn)

Lot Essay

It is extremely unusual to find a a Qur'an written on pages of sandalwood, and, with their extreme fragility, for it to have survived virtually intact.
