Lot Essay

Note: Violet ink was at first used and a start made with the top row of stamps in this colour, but it did not show up well on the lilac background, so was abandoned and the balance surcharged in vermilion. As four half sheets were utilised this gives 24 halfpenny stamps in violet and 936 in vermilion.
