cover 1890 (10 July) entire letter from Arthur Puzey written at the Inyani River in Matabeleland addressed to his father at East London, bearing British Bechuanaland 1887 2d. tied by Mafeking c.d.s. (5.8). The contents include "All day long we have scouts out on each side and behind and in front of the main body. Every night we make a scarum of bushes, in which we sleep fully dressed, with our revolvers on, and just behind our horses, in case we want to retire to Camp Tuli or clear from the Matabeles...Dr. Jameson, who is with us, has gone ahead with Mr. Selous to examine the country.." Lot Essay

Note: Arthur Puzey joined the Pioneer Column which set out from Bechuanaland to occupy Mashonaland to the north of Lobengula's Kingdom of Matabeleland, and which established a settlement at Fort Salisbury in September 1890. Puzey then spent time travelling and serving with detachments of the British South Africa Company Police in the eastern parts of Mashonaland. During his time with the Pioneer Column and whilst in Mashonaland, Arthur maintained an extensive correspondence with his parents in Cape Colony. His letters were invariably written on the inside of an envelope in pencil.
