Jean Gaumy was the first photographer allowed to document French prison life. He had worked as an editor and photographer on his local newspaper in Rouen while completing his university education and in 1972 the Viva agency distributed his photographs. The following year he joined Gamma. During the 1980s he make a number of films and has travelled extensively in Central America and Iran.
