Erich Hartmann was born in Germany but emigrated to the United States in 1938. He studied photography after the War and an exhibition of his work, Sunday Under the Bridge, opened at the Museum of the City of New York in 1956. An exhibition and book project Our Daily Bread toured throughout the United States in 1962 and from 1969 to 1972 he lectured for Syracuse University.
