Lot Essay

This is a photograph of an engraving after Rubens' altarpiece in the Antwerp Cathedral. It is possible that the photograph was taken by M. Lecchi, a Milanese painter who had invented a system for the fixation of colours on Daguerreotypes. In 1842 it was reported that he had arrived in Belgium in order to take copies of paintings by the Flemish masters such as Rubens and Van Dyck.
