Lot Essay

Walter Gilbert (c.1870s-1946) was a prolific and versatile sculptor, specialising in ornamental and free-standing figures. In 1894 he founded the Bromsgrove Guild which after being granted a Royal Warrant in 1908, carried out various important commissions including the reredos for Liverpool Cathedral and the bronze doors for the Bank of England.
Gilbert also executed a series of garden statues and fountains in collaboration with Louis Weingartner, a colleague from the guild; it is likely that this piece is part of this group.
