Lot Essay

A pair of torcheres of similar overall form were sold from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. McGuire, Newtown Park House, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, Ireland, Christie's house sale, 20-22 Spetember 1976, lot 46. Their bases were carved with the more obviously symbolic monogram IHS and it has been suggested that the present candlesticks are masonic. The monogram may refer to a position within the lodge.
