Lot Essay

This tapestry was made in conjunction with a series made by Lefebvre between 1731 and 1735 as part of the Septième Tenture made of the Les Mois Lucas series. This tenture was eventually bought by King Stanislas of Poland, who added the Royal insignia to the border.

At the same time Lefebvre executed further tapestries of the same series for individual clients. They were of the same subject but with slight variations in the borders. This particular tapestry is first individually mentioned in the exhibition Exposition de l'Union centrale des Beaux-Arts appliqués à l'industrie of 1876 as cat. no. 360 bis. No. 360 bis. Le Mois de Janvier. - Gobelins, monogramme: L.F. (Le Febvre), à Madame Masselin
