The various features such as the top's 'eliptic middle and eliptic hollow on each side', the 'Marlborough' hermed feet, serpentined apron and commode doors, all appear in patterns for sideboards published in Thomas Shearer's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 4 and 5. The quality of its veneer and elegant ribbon inlay are also typical of Messrs. Gillows' work at this period
