Lot Essay
These three classical scenes are by a different hand to the previous lots. The first scene is possibly symbolic of 'Love being comforted at the Altar of Hope', and can possibly attributed to a hand working close to Lady Templeton (d.1823). While the architect James Wyatt was embellishing Frogmore, Windsor, in the early 1790s, Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George III, decorated its Gallery with related Etruscan-coloured prints that featured in a series, etched by Tomkins in 1790, after 'cut Chinese paper' designs created by Elizabeth, Lady Templeton. These were inspired by Lawrence Stern's Sentimental Journey, of 1768, and accompanied the Princess's own compositions, which were inspired by Apuleus' Story of Cupid and served as overdoors.
