Lot Essay

The sitter is presumably either the first or second wife of Peter Langford Brooke (see note to previous lot). He married firstly in 1818 Elizabeth Sophia, eldest daughter of Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Rowley, K.C.B,: they had no children. He married secondly in 1836 Julia Seymour Buccleugh, daughter of Colonel John Campbell of Shawfield, Argyllshire; they had no children.

Other protraits by the artist, possibly commissioned at the same time by patrons who lived nearby, are of Lady Sykes at Tatton Park, and a full length of George Harry, 7th Earl of Stamford and his sister Margaret as children, at Dunham Massey.
