[MORGHEN, Rafaello (1758-1833)]. Celebre mascherata fatta nella splendissima città di Napoli In Campagna felice nel Carnovale dell' anno 1778. Rappresentante nella verità della sua maestosa comparsa Il viaggio del Gran Signore alla Mecca. [Naples?: 1778?].

A suite of 12 unbound plates (plate size: 228 x 385mm; various sheet sizes): engraved text leaf with explanantion of plates, and 11 plates printed in bistre and finished by hand, by Morghen. (All tipped onto backing sheets and window-mounted (mounts: 360 x 540mm., the tenth plate holed with slight loss, the others browned with some spotting and dampstaining.) [With:] two duplicate plates from from the black-printed issue of the same work, similarly mounted. All contained within a single later drop-back cloth box. Provenance: Gino Doria (bookplate on lid of box).

A rare series of views illustrating the parade in Naples during the Carnival of 1788. Morghen, the son of Filippo, and nephew of Giovanni Elia, showed extraordinary early promise as an engraver. Le Blond considered him "un des graveurs les plus celebres des temps modernes" and the present series amply demonstrates his talents. Le Blond II, p.54.
