A cartoon for the figure of St. Martin in the Chancel East Window at St. Martin's Church, Brompton, Cumberland. The church was designed by Philip Webb under the guidance of George Howard, later Earl of Carlisle, and contains a remarkable series of stained glass windows by Morris and Company, all designed by Burne-Jones.
The East window, made from specially prepared cartoons in 1880-81, is particularly fine. Most of the other cartoons for the window exist, several are in the Art Gallery at Carlisle, one is in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow.
The window cartoons St. Martin, Pelican, St. Dorothea and The Virgin Mary have been worked up in waxy coloured chalks after use as stained glass cartoons
