Lot Essay

Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain, the celebrated fondeur-racheveur, maître in 1748.
Probably Abraham Gilbert, maître horloger in 1726, who lived in the Place Dauphine and executed clocks signed by the same bronzier

Saint Germain employed the History of Diana the Huntress on several cartel clocks. One signed by the same horloger was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 25 June 1982, lot 92. Another signed cartel, the dial by Jean-Baptiste Baillon, was sold by Galerie Köller in May 1977 in Zurich.

A further cartel clock of this model was sold from the collection of Baron Albert von Goldschmidt-Rothschild at Schoss Grüneburg, Frankfurt am Main, Hermann Ball and Paul Graupe, Berlin, 14 March 1933, lot 35.

Another cartel clock with the same huntress cresting, struck with the C couronné poinçon, was sold Sotheby's London, 1 July 1966, lot 49
