The three part reversable outer case heavily chased and engraved to the reverse with finely engraved urban scene to the centre and engine- turned surround, similar engraved design to the front bezel, the reverse opened by depressing a button in the pendant, the same button opening the back cover of the watch when removed from its travelling case, the similarly chased and engraved inner case with urban scene to the centre, the signed and numbered white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and blued steel spade hands, the signed and numbered frosted gilt 3/4-plate fusee movement jewelled to the third with screwed chatons, bi-metallic balance with diamond endstone, under hinged cuvette, the number repeated on the back cover of the case, further engraved F.H.Clark & Co. Memphis, with later red leather bound two part travelling box

Lot Essay

Edward Daniel Johnson, born 1816, died 1889, was a chronometer maker of repute. This unusual good quality pocketwatch would date probably mid 19th century. The Assay mark with crown indicates the cases was probably made in Denmark and the watch was then retailed in Memphis U.S.A. by Clark and Co. There is no doubt that the cases were made for this movement.
