Lot Essay

These figures are executed in the style associated with the celebrated sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (d. 1887). Although not signed, the stance, phyisognmy and the treatment of the falling hair are characteristic of Carrier-Belleuse's Oeuvre (see footnote to Lot 377).

Thiébaut Frères, based in the Faubourg St. Denis were one of Paris' most productive foundries of the second half 19th Century, having a reputation for consistent casts, often superior to their rivals.
