The present figure is after the marble sculpture of Narcissus now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This was until recently thought to be Michelangelo's lost Cupid executed in Rome for Jacobo Galli. However it is now thought that the figure is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original to which the head was added in the 16th Century and which was extensively recut at the same time, probably by the artist Valerio Cioli (1529-1599) who is referred to by Vasari as a restorer of classical sculpture.
