Lot Essay

Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) was one of the most creative of 20th Century jewellery designers. Having worked in Paris in the
1930's making costume jewellery for Schiaparelli, he moved to New
York in the late 1930's and after the War began to design jewels in
precious and semi-precious materials, maintaining the exciting elements of fantasy and freedom that had characterised his costume
jewellery. In 1956 he joined Tiffany as vice President and head of his own department. His jewels were colourful and exuberant, based
on the more bizarre aspects of nature. The "nails" of gold on this
ring were often used as a decorative device to stab surfaces of bright enamels or pavé-set stones
