Towards the end of the 1920s Chagall habitually spent part of the winter in Megéve in the Hôtel du Soleil d'Or. Captivated by the fine views from his hotel window, Chagall painted a series of panoramas incorporating the window itself as an integral part of the composition. He was clearly fascinated by the contrast between the geometrical flat of the window frame and the recession of the extensive mountain landscape beyond.
