DELACROIX, Eugène (1798-1863). Autograph letter signed to an unnamed correspondent, n.p. [Paris], 21 March 1857, asking his correspondent to make his request to M. Andrieu, and advising him the the theme of the picture is not decided, 'à moins que la destination du tableau ne soit pas fixée, un sujet plutôt dans un genre doux, commes figures de femmes', and writing of his recent illness, 'tout-à-fait malade et la convalescence sera longue encore', 1¼ pages, 8° (205 x 132mm), integral blank.
Delacroix is recommending his pupil and collaborator Pierre Andrieu (1821-1892), with whom he worked on the decoration of the Hôtel de Ville at Paris. In his diary he records that he left his house for the first time on 17 March following his illness. In this letter Delacroix may be referring to the decorations for the Chapel of the Holy Angels in Saint-Sulpice. The letter is unpublished.
