Lot Essay

Carol Sheehan (to whom we are indebted for her assistance in compiling this entry) includes similar carvings to the present one in her book on argillite carvings (1981, figs.79-81) which illustrate various aspects of the Bear-Mother myth of the Haida. She tells us that our carving was probably from the decade 1865/75
